Maxwell 2600 Farad 2.5V Ultracapacitor
Maxwell BCAP0010 A08 BOOSTCAP 2600 farad 2.5 volt ultracapacitor. These ultracapacitors were used in a hybrid bus application.
These are the next generation of energy storage, and will eventually replace batteries in many applications.
They are very similar to normal capacitors, except they have enormously more energy storage capacity. They have the following advantages over batteries:
- Can be charged and discharged far more rapidly than batteries (almost instantaneously in most applications)
- Not affected by temperature extremes
- Virtually unlimited life (over one million charge/discharge cycles)
- No complex charge controller necessary, just be sure the voltage never exceeds the unit's rated voltage of 2.5V
- Contain no acid or corrosive chemicals
Basic specs:
- Capacitance 2600 farads
- DC Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) 0.7 milliohm
- Specific Energy Density 4.3 WH/KG
- Operating Temperature Range -35°C to +65°C
- Stored energy 8125 joules (2.26 WH)
- Leakage Current (max) 5 mA
- Connections M8 Bolts
- Weight 1.25 lb (568 grams)
- Diameter 2.4inches (61 mm)
- Length 7.0 inches (179 mm)

One important application for these devices is for electric vehicle regenerative braking. Due to their ability to quickly charge and discharge, they can recover 80% or more of the car's energy that would otherwise be lost in heat. Batteries generally can recover less than 30% of this energy due to their limited charge acceptance.
Another application is the storage of solar energy. Many solar applications (garden lights, for instance) quickly fail due to the poor life expectancy of the battery in repeated charge/discharge cycles, poor charge control, and temperature cycling.
Ultracapacitors are largely immune to these problems. These ultracapacitors can be combined in series for more voltage or parallel for more current.
They ought to be good for solar related projects such as remote sensor power, solar lighting, solar electric gates, etc
To see a great video of a starter booster we made click HERE .
This 7 liter marine diesel engine was started with seven of these ultracaps charged by a car battery.
We also sell similar boosters, and parts for you to make your own.
And HERE is a very good website dedicated to ultracaps with a lot of useful info, theory and tips.
And HERE you can see an entertaining video of how to destroy nails and coins with ucaps.
Click HERE to see an interesting web page by someone who made a pool lighting system using solar panels and ultracapacitors.
They are also beginning to be used in space satellite applications due to their robust design and superior life expectancy over batteries. And now they are in the new Pugeot cars for stop/start systems.
See http://www.sae.org/mags/aei/8412 for a recent article on this application.
